Freelance Editorial

Thank you for your interest in my editorial services. I am currently offering two options.

1. PROOFREADING/COPY-EDITING
$50/hr
Service includes:
Basic proofing and copy-editing of comics and copy for clarity and accuracy. Available at the scripting or lettering proof stages. Proof to "comics standard" or the AP style guide unless a specific other style is requested. Prose proofing may be available upon inquiry.
+$10/hr if significant research is required (e.g. lots of actual fact-checking or checking against lore bibles).

2. STANDARD EDITORIAL SERVICE
$75/hr (expected minimum of 4 hours)
Service includes:
A full suite of editorial duties for your comic. From initial development to seeing the comic sent to print, I will be there to provide guidance and assistance.
  •  Development - Discussing general and specific directions for an initial outline or pitch document. Working to build the story to be as strong as possible from the beginning and figuring out how to position it for maximum audience appeal/potential pitching to publishers or agents.
  • Breakdowns & Scripts - Reviewing and giving notes on initial story/page breakdowns and scripts. Keeping an eye on tone, voice, pacing, consistency, and proofing for comics style and ease of use for the rest of the creative team. Building up everything that's already working by strengthening the things that maybe aren't.
  • Art - Reviewing and giving notes on any stages of art: thumbnails, pencils, inks/lineart, colors or any combination thereof. Keeping an eye on tone, pacing, anatomy, consistency, sizing, readability, space for lettering, keeping to any needed design guidelines, etc. Ensuring the things you're doing right are reinforced and that there's clear feedback on how to fix the things that need adjustment.
  • Lettering - Reviewing and giving notes on lettered pages. Keeping an eye on format, accuracy, consistency, readability, and marriage between the script and art. Preparing your comic for its final presentation.
  • Final/Printer Proofing - Reviewing the final proof of all the elements together as a last check.

In addition to the process stage pieces, services also include:
  • Notes via email for easy reference, but happy to hop on a phone or video call to discuss things in real time.
  • Able to make connections for any needed positions on a book, though obviously outside creators will have to reach a separate agreement with you.
  • Willing to make reasonable corrections at later stages, assuming I can (e.g., making small coloring tweaks, lettering changes, etc).
  • Recommendations for how to put the best foot forward with the book--building a stronger pitch packet to take to publishers or agents or showing the best parts in your personal marketing strategy for self-published projects.
  • Deadline setting and reminders.

Additional duties may also be included, pending discussion with the client. Some, like significant copywriting, may incur an additional fee. If I am credited on the project, I may promote its release/any crowdfunding campaigns at my discretion. Pitch consultation does not guarantee that it'll be picked up anywhere. I am open to working on both SFW and NSFW projects, however, due to my professional standing in the industry, I am unable to work on most fan projects. As always with comics, please ask for my availability with only the most general of details on the project first: I cannot read pitches blind for your and my protection.

Inquire for availability with a brief description of your project and needs here.
David was my first editor in major comics publishing, as we worked on a story together for BOOM!’s “Hello Darkness” series. Not only was he incredibly supportive and professional at every step of the whole process of creating our story, but his kindness and generosity shone through in a business that can sometimes be somewhat bereft of it. His creativity and forward-thinking mindset unquestionably elevated our story, and made me that much more excited to delve further into this wild business of comics. On top of all that: I’m still using a good deal of his design and layout tips and tricks to this day in my personal work. I’m truly lucky to have worked with him!

I worked with David during his tenure on IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog series and related titles. He was always constructive and helpful, giving me room to be creative while helping to focus and tighten up the narrative. He was especially supportive when navigating notes from our licensing partners, finding clever and succinct answers to problems I was struggling with. He's versatile, savvy, and overall a pleasure to work with. I will always be happy to jump on a book he's overseeing.

"I first worked with David when he was the editor for the critically acclaimed series Canto and after that I did some covers for Transformers and a couple of Godzilla books, both of very important properties for the publisher at the time. My latest job with him is the recently launched (with general praise) VR Troopers. My point is, he's one of the best handling both original books and franchise properties. He knows his stuff and he always replies emails right away (Ok, this last part may be more important for me than for the rest)."
